Black Friday
Where did it come from?
Black Friday is originally an American tradition that takes place every year the day after Thanksgiving Day. It first started in Philadelphia back in the 1950’s, although at the time it actually had nothing to do with shopping! It was actually a term coined by the police to describe the chaos that ensued when shoppers and tourists took to the streets after Thanksgiving Day to watch a big Army-Navy football game that was held annually.
In the 1980’s the term Black Friday was re-invented and it was used to reinforce the notion that the day after Thanksgiving was the day when retailers always made massive profits. In 2010 Black Friday found its way to the UK, and hence Ireland has also taken it on board, with consumers set to spend over €100 million this year in that one day alone!
What to Expect?
Previous years have shown shoppers losing the run of themselves completely and scenes that wouldn’t be out of place in a zombie movie! There is no doubt that people readily take up the role of crazed Black Friday shopper!
With mobile usage having surpassed desktop usage as was predicted for 2015, a key difference in this year’s Black Friday will be a surge in the number of people shopping online. Stats have shown that on Black Friday, the busiest time for retailers online is between 9am and 11am. So our advice to you is to get online as early as possible! Shop on your daily commute if you can, it means that you will get ahead of the game and also means you won’t get given out to by your boss for shopping while you’re supposed to be working!
A great place to check for discounts is on social media. Retailers are sure to be promoting their special offers heavily on social media, and some might even have offers that are exclusive to their social media followers! So keep those beady shopping eyes open!
If you have a few favourite stores that you know you will want to shop in, be sure to create an online account with them the day before so you don’t waste time with adding payment details on the day.
