Mascara Wands Decrypted!
We don’t know about you, but some of us have bought dozens of different mascaras with different wand types, and have been disappointed with our purchases.
The fact of the matter is, not everyone has the same type of natural lashes, and this will greatly affect how the mascara works on you. Here is a list of lash types, so you can decide which ones you have:
- Thick individual hairs, but not many lashes
- Thick, full lashes but short
- Thick and long full lashes (we wish!)
- Thin individual hairs and sparse
- Thin, short but full lashes
- Thin, long and full lashes
The mascara that you choose will depend on what effect you are looking for. Some may want a more natural look, and some may want a more glamorous look. Do not worry about the curl here: even if the mascara says it will curl your eyelashes, you usually will have to use an eyelash curler before you apply your mascara (we all do it, there’s no shame in it!).
Now let’s get started on which wand to choose:
1. Thick individual hairs, but not many lashes
For those who have this type, you have got it easy! The brush you should be looking for is fat, with many bristles, like the OVERSIZED one in the photo. This will make it seem like you have more lashes, since the purpose of these wands is to create volume. This lash type is easy to work with, as opposed to those with thinner lashes. You should always apply a first thin coat of mascara, to separate the lashes (a tip is to wipe off excess product on the rim of the mascara tube), wait for that to dry, then apply a second, heavier coat to create the volume effect.
We have tested the Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara, in black. It really does the job nicely without creating clumps:
2. Thick, full lashes but short
For thick but short lashes, you should choose a lengthening mascara. The best wand type for this is the COMB wand, like the RUBBER SHORT or the FLAT COMB in the photo. These wands will not only separate each lash to make them look tidier, but also make sure that the product goes from base to the very tip of each lash. We would suggest that you go over the tip of the lashes twice: By adding more mascara to the tip, it will build up and make the lashes look longer.
We would suggest the L’Oreal Telescopic Lengthening Mascara for clean definition, with its rubber comb-type wand: Not only will it separate thick lashes, but it will add length to the tips.
3. Thick and long full lashes
Doesn’t every girl wish she had this? For the lucky few, we would suggest a wand that will tidy the lashes, and will not create clumps. For this, you can try the new Rimmel Wonder’full mascara with added Argan oil to nourish the lashes. This mascara does not apply a lot of product to the lashes (you can always add extra coats), and makes them feel soft and natural:
4.Thin individual hairs and sparse
Here, your aim should be to get the maximum out of your lashes. Several mascaras have added growth serum, to lengthen and add volume to the lashes over time. We would suggest adding two to three coats of mascara. The best options for you, in our opinion, are:
The Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells Mascara is enriched with precious plant cell extracts. This mascara makes your lashes look stronger, fuller and amplified.
The other option would be the Lash Accelerator from Rimmel, which also has a lengthening serum in the formula.
5. Thin, short but full lashes
The best option for people with lots of thin lashes would be to first separate and lengthen them with a comb wand mascara. Here, the most important thing is to avoid clumps, which are very visible when you have thin lashes, so we would suggest trying a comb-style wand with very close teeth.
A good one to try is the Max Factor Masterpiece mascara, which really separates the lashes, and coats each and every one of them.
These types of lashes need definition and volume. The tricky part is not getting them stuck together. Again, we would suggest a volume, close-toothed mascara. The best option here would be the Maybelline Rocket Volume mascara. It separates with its close rubber bristles, and adds volume all at once!
And THERE YOU HAVE IT! There are no secrets anymore! All tested and approved by Magees.
Ladies, one last piece of advice: Now that you have found your perfect mascara, take care of it! This means no pumping the brush up and down in the tube, it will only dry out the product faster.
As for the face we make when we apply it, not to worry, we are all the same!
