Fighting Melanoma With La Roche Posay!
When foreigners think of Ireland, the first few things they think of are:
It is well known that Irish people have a deep intolerance to sunshine, as their genetics dictate. This is to say that they will try to darken their skin by any means possible. Hence the popularity of self-tanning products and UV beds in Ireland.
However it is important to spread awareness of the risks that UV rays can pose to the Irish population. Melanoma and other types of skin cancer are becoming more and more of a concern due to the trend of looking like we all spent two weeks in the Caribbean, year round. Recently, one frequent UV bed user shocked the world by posting a “Skin cancer selfie” to raise awareness:
Her skin cancer is pretty far along and she in undergoing intensive treatment.
At Magees, we were very happy to discover that popular skincare brands such as La Roche Posay are taking the matter to heart and trying to educate the masses on how to recognise and prevent melanoma and other types of skin cancer.
They recently launched a campaign called “Become a skin checker”, a clever campaign using cute dalmatians to point out that we need to check our “Spots” (our moles and marks) for any irregularities.
They teach us their “ABCDE” method for recognising and monitoring our “spots”:
They also recommend that you evaluate your risk by taking a quiz on their partner website.
They have formulated a series of 10 questions such as “Select the colour of your skin, hair colour and eye colour” and “In the summer do you expose yourself to the sun between 11 am and 4 pm” and “How many moles do you have? Over 40?”
They then recommend a course of action, and if they think it is important to consult a dermatologist.
In ANY case: Please remember to use sunscreen daily on all exposed skin. Most moisturisers today contain SPF from SPF10 to SPF50, and so do foundations and finishing powders!
Self tanning mousses, sprays and lotions are getting more and more advanced and there is really no reason to torture your skin with UV beds anymore. Some countries like France are currently in the process of passing a law to ban UV beds all together.
At Magees we have a range of face moisturisers with UV protection, including BB, CC and DD creams (DD is the new trend and stands for Daily Defense).
- Vichy Idealia BB Creme SPF25 €15.65
- Lancome City Miracle CC Cream SPF50 €36.00
- Clarins Skin Perfecting BB Cream SPF25 €34.50
- Nuxe Creme Prodigieuse DD Creme SPF30 €21.00
For those who want to bronze safely, we also have a large selection of self tanning mousses, creams and sprays that can be found on our website and in store:
Stay safe and love yourself.
